Debt account

Lent money, or borrowed it yourself — create an account of type “Debt”: one account per person or organisation. There is deliberately no separate “debt” entity: the money moves through transactions anyway, and an account brings the balance, the history, archiving, synchronisation and book transfer for free.

Creating one: a debt starts with money changing hands

A debt does not come out of thin air — somebody handed money to somebody. So the form asks not only for the amount but also which account the money left, and creates the debt as a transfer.

  1. On the “Accounts” screen press + New account, type — “Debt”.
  2. Name the account after the debtor or the creditor — “Ivan (debt)”, “Marina”.
  3. Pick the direction: “They owe me” or “I owe”. It decides which way the money goes, and the labels below change with it.
  4. Enter the amountwithout a minus: the direction switch takes care of the sign.
  5. Choose the account and the date of the handover. With “They owe me” the field reads “Money left the account” (we debit it), with “I owe” — “Money arrived in the account” (we credit it). Both fields are required.
  6. Optionally switch on a due date and press Create.

The app creates a transfer — the very transaction debts are kept with. It shows up in the “Transactions” tab of the debt card straight away, and the book's total balance does not change: the money did not appear or vanish, it moved between accounts.

A debt from the past is created the same way — simply put in the date when the money actually changed hands. There is no separate “the debt already existed” mode: the transaction lands in the history on the right day, and past-month balances add up.

The handover account is picked among accounts in the debt's currency; debt and archived accounts are not offered. If the book has no account in that currency, the app says so plainly instead of quietly creating the debt — create the account first. A cross-currency handover (you lent roubles, the debt is in dollars) is recorded by hand as an FX transfer.

A new debt: type “Debt”, direction “I owe” — and the labels change to “Money arrived in the account”. The account and the date are required; once saved, the debt card already has its first transaction.
On the phone and the tablet the form is the same: direction, unsigned amount, handover account and date — and the same transfer once saved.

How a debt is kept

Lent money, or borrowed it yourself — create an account of type “Debt”: one account per person or organisation. In the form pick the direction — “They owe me” or “I owe” — and enter the amount (without a minus, the switch takes care of the sign). Optionally set a “Repay by” date: as it approaches, and once it passes, the app highlights it.

From then on the amount changes by itself — through ordinary transfers. Lent more: a transfer from your account to the debt account. Paid back to you: a transfer the other way. Borrowed yourself: the reverse. The account balance is the answer to “who owes whom”: plus — they owe you, minus — you owe, zero — settled.

Transfers do not count as income or expense, so debts do not distort your spending statistics, budgets or (in a business book) taxes. Debt accounts do count towards the total balance though: lending money does not change the total, it just moves it.

On the “Accounts” screen debts are gathered into a “Debts” group with a “They owe you · You owe” summary. The account card shows the direction, the due date and a “Record a repayment” button — it opens a transfer with the debt side already filled in; all that is left is to pick your own account and the amount.

A summary of all debts at once is the “Debts” card on the Summary: “They owe you · You owe · Net” and a list of open debts with their due dates.

An account of type “Debt”: the “They owe me / I owe” switch and the “Repay by” date in the form, the “Debts” group with its summary on “Accounts” and the “Record a repayment” button on the card.
The phone and the tablet have the same: a form with the direction switch and the due date, a “Debts” group with its summary, and “Record a repayment” on the account card.

How the debt is being paid down

A debt account's whole life consists of transfers, while “Cash flow”, the “Income / Expenses” figures and the “Analytics” tab only count operating income and expenses. On a debt card they stood at zero by construction. So a debt has its own pair of figures and its own chart.

On the phone it is the same: the balance card's chips show “Repaid / Added” for the month, and on the tablet layout “Debt trend” takes the place of “Cash flow” — tap a column to see the direction and the balance at its end.

A debt card: the “Repaid · month” and “Added · month” figures, and below them “Debt trend” with a period switch — you can see the debt heading for zero.
Phone: the “Repaid / Added” chips on a debt account’s balance card instead of the forever-zero “Income / Expense”.
